Harrison Bergeron

1.How did your understanding of the story change after participating
in the discussion?

It gave me new insight into the story. I always like hearing other peoples opinions and perspectives on the same story that I read. I think it’s really cool how two people can read the same thing and take two totally different things from it.

2. Review your participation in the discussion.

I participated well, I talked and contributed but didn’t dominate the discussion like I often do.

3. Choose one of the original discussion questions (found on your
discussion sheet) and answer it.

Why did the governemnt feel so threatened by Harrison?

Because he was dangerous to them because of the way they were running things.

Mexican Horse

3 Oct

EL PASO, TX- It’s big, it’s bright, and it’s a peace offering. Mexico much like Greece after their failed attempt to seize Troy has offered the United States a large Horse. It appears that Mexico is finally going to clean up its act and our border patrol can take a break.

The border patrol was ecstatic about receiving this amazing gift from the Mexicans. “Really it’s just fantastic. It kind of reminds me of that movie Troy where the Greeks give Troy that giant wooden horse and then the movie ends, or at least that’s where I stopped watching, but yeah, it was a great movie.”

It was such an amazing gift that the border patrol thought it would be a great idea to bring it straight to the white house. Obama saw the present and was touched. He ordered it to be taken and left in the white house yard. When the border patrol presented the first good idea that they have ever had that the horse should be scanned to make sure it’s safe the president said that that would be an insult to the Mexicans and that was unacceptable. So it not lays in the white house front yard, unguarded and unsearched, right where it belongs.

Role of government

1. Define the issue

Choosing the appropriate role the government should take on to address the nations problems has been a big issue between democrats and republicans.

2. Why is this issue important to the election?

This issue is important to the election because people will ultimately choose whose side they are on. Whoever is elected will have a strong influence in the way the country will run and how the people will be effected.

3. What is your party’s position?

Democrats: The democrats feel that the government should play more of a role in peoples lives. Examples of this is how democrats support medicare, health care, welfare (etc.)

Republicans: The republicans feel that the government is doing too much and it should be left to businesses and individuals.

4. What are experts saying?

David J. Lynch – Journalist for Bloomberg news

“The platform reflects the influence of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, offering as the remedy for the nation’s economic ills a familiar recipe of low taxes, light regulation, expanded oil drilling and free enterprise. It vows to reduce personal and corporate taxes, repeal Obama’s health-care law, promote small businesses and avoid taxpayer bailouts of troubled financial institutions.”

Jack Kenny – Journalist

There are 47 percent who will vote for the President, no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent on the government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it…. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. And so my job is not to worry about those people — I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.

Marc Fisher-The Washington Post:

“Democratic platforms still spell out positions distinctly different from Republican stances on social and environmental issues, supporting abortion rights, affirmative action, and tighter regulations on polluters and financial institutions. Democrats consistently back a more expansive view of government’s role in science, the arts, and aid to the poor and the elderly.”

James Rosen-Journalist

“Democrats today are solidly in favor of a bigger federal government that provides more services. They want it to spend more money to stimulate the economy. They want to raise taxes on the wealthy, and they say that would help the economy. They think the government should do more to help the needy even if it means more debt”

5. 3 quotes of prominent pundits

“So, now we have a controversy over Governor Romney telling supporters that a large portion of the American population is dependent on government and most likely will not vote for him. Here is my question; Why is that controversial? That’s true.”-Bill O’Reilly

“My point of view is that the people of America still believe in the American dream. And our responsibility as leaders, as public servants, is to make sure that this is a country where everyone has that equal opportunity to compete and succeed and pursue their dreams”-Senate candidate George Allen of Virginia

“He says it’s bad for business. Except when it comes to his business. It was one thing when a million middle-class jobs were on the line. It was another when his own financial interests and those of his partners were on the line.”-Joe Biden
